The motorcycle industry can be weird from at times. What’s hot today may be tomorrow’s trash. It’s constantly changing, and morphing into different genres and styles constantly. No wonder why so many companies have tried to make a name for themselves and failed miserably. There is one company, no more like one man that has built up a reputation of being what the motorcycle industry is all about. He has been around for almost 5 decades and only continuous to dominate the market. Who is this mythical legend some consider to be a biker god? Arlen Ness!

That’s right, Arlen has been a dominating force in the cruiser industry since the 60′s. His company has produced some of the most tricked out bikes you or I have ever been lucky enough to lay our eyes on. They also manufacture some of the highest quality parts around, that will set your bike apart from the rest. So how exactly did Arlen go from being an unknown contractor with a passion for bikes, to becoming the most recognized name in the motorcycle industry?

The Beginning

To start let’s take a trip back in time to when gas was cheap, the nation was at war, hippies were running amuck, and the good times were about to roll…1967. A young Arlen Ness brings home his first bike, a beautiful 1947 Knucklehead. Now most people would be happy with just being in the same room as one of these, but not Arlen, he wanted custom. He stripped it down and gave it a full custom paint job, and the icing on the cake he took home first prize in his first custom bike show, just one of many. He spent many of nights customizing bikes for a growing customer base, and finally got busy enough he quit his job and went into it full time.

The Revolution Begins

Soon after going into business for himself, Ness opened his first parts store in San Leandro, CA. He worked it part time at nights so he could build bikes during the day, but that didn’t last long. Soon word got out about the “Ness-ecities”, and it spread like wildfire. Arlen opened the store full time and brought his sons in to help him run it.

Today

Today Arlen Ness is the name to have on your bike, whether it’s a custom Ness special or you have a custom set of Ness pipes on your bike. Every year the Ness family releases a limited edition fleet of bikes. The most recent is the 2012 Victory Cory Ness’ Limited Ed. Cross Country bike. They also design and build their own line of bikes which include the Speedliner, Highliner, and the Lowliner.

The Ness family also puts out a line of custom parts for many brands of bikes. They have won many awards for their stylish wheel designs, powerful exhaust systems, chromed out mirrors, and so on. Anything you need to really set your bike apart from the rest.

So what is the real reason that Arlen Ness is the premier brand in the motorcycle industry? It’s simple, it’s Arlen’s refusal to imitate others, his sense of style and his willingness to take risks is still seen today in his slogan of, “Always innovate, never imitate.” Safe Riding!

The range of cars that can run on renewable fuels is increasing. Primarily it is about cars that can run on ethanol (E85) and biogas. There is also a certain range of cars with electric and hybrid drive.

For all those in the emissions of fossil carbon dioxide per kilometer can be reduced significantly.

Gasoline
Gasoline is still the preferred fuel in the world. 95-octane petrol sold consists of 95 percent oil and five percent ethanol. Ethanol share is limited today to five percent of EU fuel directive, but the regulations have changed. From January 2011 the possibility to increase this share to 10 percent.

Diesel

Ethanol has less energy content than gasoline. Consumption per mil is therefore about 35 percent higher than with gasoline. From a lifecycle perspective, carbon dioxide emissions about 55 percent lower than with gasoline. When considering also the emissions of fossil carbon dioxide generated in producing and distribution of both ethanol and gasoline.

Cars can run on E85 are called flexi-fuel cars because they can run on any mixture of gasoline and E85. Transport Agency’s assessment is that the percentage of E85, which was refueled in ethanol vehicles in 2009 was about 60 percent. With this degree of E85 fueling releasing ethanol vehicles out about 20 percent less carbon dioxide than the average new petrol car. Emissions of other substances that are hazardous to environment and health is about the same as for petrol cars.

The number of filling stations with E85 is increasing rapidly across the country and the beginning of September 2010 there were about 1700 pieces.

Vehicle
Vehicle fuel consisting mainly of methane. It may be renewable (biogas, made from organic material such as sludge, manure and waste) or have fossil (natural gas).

Clean biogas, essentially no fossil emissions, but small amounts of the greenhouse gas methane released during production. Although biogas-powered vehicles therefore affect climate, but emissions are 80-90 percent lower than with gasoline. Natural gas reduces carbon emissions about as much as diesel fuel compared to gasoline, which is around 20 percent. Emissions of other substances that are hazardous to environment and health is about the same as for petrol cars.

Many models starting and running a shorter distance on petrol before the engine turns to gas. The petrol tank may sometimes be small (15 liters) while other models have larger gas tank and you can then run a greater distance as gasoline.

Electric hybrid cars
In hybrid cars combine a conventional internal combustion engine with one or more electric motors and a battery to store energy from the engine and under braking. In this way, fuel consumption is lower. Since the combustion engine will automatically stop when you stop at a red light for example, there will be no idling. Electric hybrid cars have their biggest advantage in heavy city traffic where the number of stops and starts are great, but even at highway operation, fuel consumption is relatively low because hybrid vehicles are usually equipped with relatively small internal combustion engines.

Who Needs A License?

According to many state laws anyone riding a two or three wheeled motorcycle must have a license in order to do so legally. If an instructional permit from another state is held, then riders typically are waived from any safety course requirements. The Rider Instruction Permit

The instructional permit is a temporary motorcycle license that is issued for the purpose of giving you valuable riding/learning time on your bike. The permit has some restrictions that you must follow. For example, riders typically are not allowed to ride after dark, and in most cases they cannot have passengers at any time unless the passenger has held a license for at least two years and is a certain age such as 25 or older. In the 1960′s Steve McQueen may have enjoyed riding motorcycles, but his passion for classic Jaguar cars was undeniable. In particular, his love for the Jaguar E type resulted in an affair with this fine automobile which became and was a part of his collection until his death. The Jaguar E Type has been from the moment it was first introduced to the general public an inspiring automobile, and has certainly motivated many an admirer to purchase it the instant they saw this finely crafted car. First presented at the Geneva Auto Show in 1961, it was originally meant to be a replacement for the Coventry, which was England’s D-Type racer car. An irrefutable fact is that from the initial presentation of this fine automobile it immediately became a hit.

For those who are not familiar with the E-Type Jaguar there is further good news, because it comes available in more than one version. They are commonly referred to as “Series 1, “Series 2, and “Series 3″. The collector will most likely be drawn to the “Series 1″ version because of it’s rarity, and if a decision is made to sell the car, it will bring more money at an auction or in a private sale than the other versions. Throughout the years the interest in various types of fine automobiles has vacillated, but this has not been the case with the Jaguar. In fact, the beauty and uniqueness of this car was confirmed once again in 2008 by the Daily Telegraph, who place the Jaguar E-Type at the top of their most beautiful cars in the world list.

In the UK, one thing that many teenagers who turn 17 want to do first is start working towards their driving licence. A driving licence gives a level of freedom and opportunity, not normally afforded to someone of this age before. However, with it can come the stresses of equal spells tedium and road rage. There is another option… Motorbikes!

If you want to start on the path to motorcycle riding, the first thing you will need to do is complete your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT). The CBT is a short one day course that gives complete novices the chance to get used to the handling and awareness required for motorbike riding, away from busy roads and under the supervision of an instructor. If the instructor is happy with your progress, you will be given a certificate that allows you to ride on the road without supervision (but still carrying L plates) for a period of two years.

Once experience has built up enough and/or extra lessons have been taken, it is time for the next stages in obtaining a full motorbike licence. A multiple choice motorcycle theory test must be passed first, after which you can move onto the practical part of the test. This hands on aspect of the test is split into two modules – one of off road manoeuvres and hazard avoidance, the other an on road session of monitored ‘free’ riding. Upon successful completion of all these stages, the newly licenced rider is permitted to ride any bike up to 25kW in power for the first two years, and then they are free to ride any sized motorcycle.

However that’s not all – if the learner rider is 21 or over, they can instead opt to take their practical test via the Direct Access scheme. It involves taking fundamentally the same test but using a higher powered motorcycle than the standard 125cc machine, and when completed gives the new motorcyclist immediate access to any sized bike. Learners looking to take the Direct Access Scheme are allowed to practise on the large motorbike only under the supervision of an instructor.

Most new bikers will opt for the standard test with the two year “probationary” period – meaning getting used to the world of 125cc motorbikes, a perfect starting step into a life of motorcycle riding. There are options to match most riding styles, from the sturdy and reliable Honda CB125 to the speedy and stylish Aprilia RS125.

Maintaining a motorcycle that is parked outside of a garage will take some additional steps to assure the same life and health of the vehicle. This may include more frequent washing, covering the bike, the parking area and other factors. We have compiled this list of things to take into consideration when parking a motorcycle outside:

1. For vehicles parked outside, motorcycle covers must be used in the protection process.

2. Extra theft protection techniques such as using a club, alarm or motorcycle cover to hide the vehicle from sight are necessary.

3. For bikes parked outside, more frequent washing is required as more debris will contact the surface.

4. It is wise to park an outdoor motorcycle on your won property when possible such as in a driveway.

5. Parking the chopper in a location which avoids things such as rocks kicked up by tires such as in a driveway is recommended.

6. Better care must be taken with any valuables kept within the bike.

7. It is important to vehicle is properly secured when parked outside.

8. Be careful to not park an outdoor vehicle below trees which may drop pollen or telephone pools which may be a perching area for birds. In the inter ice cycles falling may be another concern.

9. Cycles parked outside should be waxed more frequently. If a motorcycle is parked in a garage more modern vehicles can get by with one waxing per year. When it is outdoors, at least twice is more advisable.

10. In the winter, many times outdoor vehicles will freeze over. Ice must be scrapped from windshields if there is one and the bike will require some time to warm up in colder areas.

Some motorcycle’s are parked in a garage which is great when possible. But if the vehicle is parked under a roof but is not driven for a long period of time, covering is still wise as the chances of some kind of interference over a long period of time are great. So protect that vehicle when it’s not in use.

Sun, wind, rain and snow can beat down on a bike. Additionally, theft is always a concern when a shinny chopper is parked outside – you want people to droll over your bike when you’re riding it, not when it’s sitting unprotected. Not to mention passing people or animals can bump against the parked vehicle. But a cover can prevent day to day scratching or paint damage that may occur on an uncovered vehicle.

Motorcycle owners know the value of their vehicles. And smart ones do what it takes to maintain and increase that value, keeping their vehicle looking fresh when it’s on the road, keeping the seat comfortable and keeping the resale value high. If the goal of the whole restoration process is to result in a show car to be taken to car shows, then a professional restoration is in order.

Third, check on the progress of your car restoration. Is it progressing as planned? If location is a problem, ask for regular detailed photos to be emailed to you with an explanation of what is being accomplished. If this project is a hobby you are attempting yourself, check to make sure you are keeping within your decided budget and schedule.

Whether you do it yourself or with the help of a professional, restoring your car to the original look and feel can be a very enjoyable and satisfying experience. The most fun, of course, is driving down Main Street showing it off to everyone
